Bhole Baba ki Jai !

Wherever and however big or small you may be celebrating your Navaratri you will hold a mala in your hand in these days.
The repetition of the holy names is practice in all religions. These holy names help to cleanse our mind of the painful and unproductive thoughts. It is said that during these auspicious days your spiritual activity is a lot more potent in action. These days are therefor a good occasion to do some extra time in Japa. Get up a bit earlier and in the night before sleep fill your mind with sacred mantra’s, bring down the Light within you and in doing so, also on earth.

Several times I have been asked why there are 108 beads on a mala and why 108 is a significant number.
In my research I asked Shri Mayapatti Acharya and he answered that if you give numbers to the letters od the Sanskrit alphabet 108 sounds as Brahma, The creative force in our Universe. 9 is known as the most sacred number. However many times you multiply this number and add the outcome it will always come back to 9.Like; 6×9= 54 5+4 =9 or 9×63=324 3+2+4=9. In 108
1+8= 9 and zero is considered Maya.

In the Vedic culture much is explained through numbers. Mathematicians of Vedic culture viewed 108 as the number of the wholeness of existence. Astronomically, there are 27 constellations in our galaxy and each has 4 directions. 27 x 4 = 108. In other words, the number 108 covers the whole galaxy. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Sun. The distance between the Earth and Moon is 108 times the diameter of the Moon. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. I did not make the calculations to check but I did see in a program that even though it is perhaps not completely correct it was highly impressive how close this calculation came far before telescopes and other space measuring equipment was invented. In Ayurveda the number appears ( 108 Marma points etc) but also in the Chinese healing system they recognise this number. In puja’s we encounter 108 all the time but also in scriptures and in all the power places around India.

Enjoy the holy Names during your Navaratri.
